The Seven Factors

The Seven Factors are the guiding principles behind Legends and Fairytales. Without these Factors, the game would simply not be what it is. These Factors sit at the very core... are the very foundation of what makes this game Legends and Fairytales. It is because of the Seven Factors that one character can overcome being at a severe disadvantage to another character. It is because of the Seven Factors that a character can literally accomplish the impossible... every now and then.

There are three groups of Factors which make up the Seven Factors; Hard Factors, Soft Factors and Story Factors. The first group, Hard Factors, represent only the statistical data presented on a Character Sheet. The Hard Factors are always taken into account in every situation and under all circumstances. However, it is not statistical data which Legends and Fairytales revolves around. No, it is something else.

It is the Soft and Story Factors which really bring life to Legends and Fairytales.

Ladders and Spectra

The Red Spectrum falls below – usually far below – the human average range. Aspects or Faculties in this Spectrum usually mean some sort of deficiency or handicap which may be difficult to overcome.

The Soft Factors are represented by two individual Factors which are essentially the same thing, but from two different sides of the coin. One is related to the player and one is related to the character. It comes down to a matter of participation, both in character (IC) and out of character (OOC).

The last group - Story Factors - are probably the most interesting. Made up of two separate Factors, one represents the actual effect a character has on the game and the Script as a whole. This effect can be anything, from one single action to altering the course of a scene, to completely changing the direction of the Script. The other Factor represents Cinematic Effect, though you could probably call it the “Wow Factor”.

Anytime a Factor is fulfilled (meaning that the Factor came into play and that it is applicable to a player / character), the player will be awarded a certain number of Action Tokens (of the type controlled by the Director). Now, since statistical data is always taken into account with the Hard Factors, a character who has the better Aspects and Faculties will automatically gain an advantage over the character who is less well developed.

But this is where the other Factors come into play. A character can do a lot to even up the odds by fulfilling some of the Soft and Story Factors. Doing so also awards them with Tokens from the Director. This can go a long way to help offset the advantage of a character with superior statistical data. Just remember, though, you have to play and participate to fulfill the Soft and Story Factors. These are not freebees and your Director may be quite strict with the application of these Factors and the Tokens he (or she) awards.
